Original period manufacture. A Model 1816 US Springfield smooth bore musket in .69 caliber. Being an example of 20,000 similar muskets converted from flint to percussion by the New Jersey firm of Hewes & Phillips sometime in 1863. The lock is dated 1832, with H&P initials appearing on the bolster. Three leaf, blued steel rear sight, with a front sight mounted on the forward barrel band, and a bayonet locking stud on the top of the barrel, about a 1.5 inches from the muzzle. The metal on the musket is exceptionally clean, bright steel, exhibiting minimal wear, with no corrosion around the vent cone. The hammer spring has a strong pull, easily holds at half-cock, with the vent cone in fine condition. The dark brown stock has a nice luster to the surface of the the wood, with an original cartouche on the flat of the left side. As shown in our photographs, an old repair is visible in two spots just behind the tang. Overall this is a really clean looking old musket and is quite solid. The old repair is hard to see, and just represents part of the musket's story.
