Original period photography. A very clear image of a seated Federal soldier, slightly tinted and shown wearing the issue 9 button frock coat and forage hat. Written on the interior of the case is A. E. Washburn, Allentown, Pa. Doing a bit of online research we find an Aaron Washburn residing in Moore Township Pennsylvania, who enlisted in the 153rd Pennsylvania Infantry in October of 1862. This was a nine month regiment and Washburn received his discharge in July of 1863 in Harrisburg. In spite of its short service time, the 153rd saw a tremendous amount of combat during that short time to include the Battle of Chancellorsville in May of 1863 and the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-2-3 1863. It suffered the loss of 44 killed, 209 wounded and 108 prisoners or missing.
