Original era manufacture. A very clean example of the classic M1840 Light Artillery sword of the American Civil War. The obverse ricasso is dated 1863 and bears the inspector's initials D.R., the reverse is blank, but I would guess Ames to be the manufacturer, notorious for faint makers markings. The polished steel blade measures 32 inches in length, with a sharp point, no nicksin the edge and a nice surface finish with no evidence of corrosion. The single branch brass guard has a nice brass patina, with a leather wrapped grip bound with twisted brass wire. Stamped into the right side of the guard are the numbers 32, and a smaller stamped number 23 on the quillon. There is an old plated finish to the steel scabbard, the surface of which shows scattered peppering from light surface corrosion. There are a few very shallow dents along its length as well.A sound old sword, the only issue to report is that the end of the guard where it meets the pommel cap is pusheddown slightly. The guard is not loose, and does not rattle.
