Original era manufacture. A very clean example of the US Army Officers M1850 Staff & Field Officers Sword. The polished steel blade measures 32 inches in length, with typical etched patterns on both sides of the blade, to include the letters U.S. and the American eagle. No maker or retailers name appears on the ricasso, however the words "IRON PROOVED" can be seen at the base of the spine. The blade is very clean, showing evidence of an old cleaning done many years ago by a local family, perhaps in the early 1960's during the Civil War Centennial.Beautiful cast brass guard and pommel cap, which contrasts nicely against the dark gray of the fish skin wrapped grip. The grip is tightly bound with triple strand brass wire, with none of the wires loose or out of place. The fish skin wrapping is also solid, showing a touch of wear on the inside of the grip and missing a small piece near the bottom of the pommel. The scabbard body is dent free, with a nice brown finish, and bright polished throat, upper and lower suspension fittings and drag. A very attractive sword which came down through the years from a Connecticut family named Shaw.
