Original era manufacture. Patterned after the French Mle 1845, with the addition of a large US in the brass scroll guard. 32 inch polished steel blade with an etched design on each side. Evidence of cleaned corrosion and light pitting near the tip, but overall the blade is bright. Gilded brass guard is sound, wiggles just a tad though. Fishskin wrapped grip with twisted copper wire binding. The scabbard is very interesting, the brass throat and lower suspension ring fittings are both marked 46 and are secured to the leather body with screws. The lower portion of the scabbard body is a replacement, very well done with a brass and steel drag. The repair is expertly done and looks to have been done years ago.
