Original era manufacture. A very handsome example of a Union Officers sword, is this French inspired weapon made by the German firm of Weyersberg, and imported into the United States during the war years by Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia. The polished steel blade measures 31 inches in length, running fairly straight and true, with a slight bend about one inch back from the point. Elaborate etched floral panels on each side, on the obverse the American eagle and motton "E Pluribus Unum", and on the reverse side the letters U.S.. Elaborate cast brass guard and pommel with a replacement leather bumper at the base of the blade. Fish skin wrapped grip, which is missing it's wire binding. Steel patina finish to the scabbard body, showing cleaning evidence of light surface corrosion. Brass scabbard fittings throughout, missing the lower suspension fitting screw and drag screw. Straightened bend in the scabbard drag, which provides mute evidence of honest service use, and was likely the culprit in the bend near the point. Later period, but original, officers gold brocade sword knot on the guard.
