Original era manufacture. A French inspired weapon, adopted by the US Army for Staff & Field Officers prior to the American Civil War. This weapon is maker marked as to the German manufacturer, Friedrich Potter (Pather in some references), being a rabbit's head logo with the letters F.P. below. The polished steel blade measures 32 inches in length, with etched panels on each side of the blade, on the reverse side of the blade can be seen the letters U.S.. The blade runs fairly straight and true, overall quite clean showing evidence of an old polishing and cleaning, no corrosion issues, with a minimal amount of nail catchers on the cutting edge. Ornate brass guard and pommel cap, with the letters U.S. set into the guard. Black leather wrapped grip which is bound by a single strand of twisted copper wire. Blued steel scabbard body with gilded brass furniture, most of the original blue finish remains intact. Minor surface denting on the drag. Overall this is a very presentable sword, the only minor detraction being that the guard rattles a bit. I'd like to keep this myself, but I can't be my own best customer as much as I would like to be.
