Original era manufacture. Standard 1855 pattern US Socket Bayonet for the .58 caliber Springfield rifle. Bright finished blade, with scattered staining to the surface, yet the finish has a nice luster to it. The locking ring operates as it should, and this one fits our Springfield rifle easily. Perhaps with an application of elbow grease some of the staining can be made to go away. The scabbard is of particular interest, being an example produced by the firm of Hoover & Calhoun of New York. This name can be easily seen on the pliable leather belt loop; and the pattern is noted for the large brass stud at the bottom of the belt loop, thought to enable an NCO to carry this on a shoulder suspension rather than a belt. See page 159, figure S56, American Socket Bayonets & Scabbards, by Robert M. Reilly. The leather is quite sound for its near 160 year age, with most of the finish remaining, and being pliable as well.
