Original era manufacture. Here it is, 150 year old surplus, don't you just love it. Years ago, in the mid-1970's, there was a man in upstate New York that ran ads in nearly every issue of the Shotgun News. He advertised assorted old US Civil War and Spanish American War surplus, and amongst his offerings were original Civil War knapsacks like this one, priced at $6.00 each when purchased in lots of a dozen or more. Those were the days, although $72 plus shipping, was a good bit of money then too. Well times have changed and so has the price. This example is typical of what you would have received in the mail back-in-the-day. It is nearly complete with all straps and metal fittings. The leather is fairly pliable but stiff. About the only real flaws of note are that some fabric separation can be seen where it was creased when folded for storage, and some of the tips of the strap ends are missing. On the plus side it has a very clear 1864 date and makers name. This pack is soft it could be easily stuffed with bubble wrap for a proper display. Nice old pack and ready for display.
