Original era manufacture. 150 year old surplus, don't you just love it. Years ago in the 1970's, there was a man in upstate New York that ran ads in the Shotgun News nearly every issue. He was selling assorted old US surplus and amongst his offerings were original Civil War knapsacks like this one priced at $6.00 each when purchased in lots of a dozen or more. So cool. Well times have changed and so has the price. This example is typical of what you would have received in the mail back-in-the-day. It is complete with all straps and metal fittings. The leather is fairly pliable but stiff. About the only real flaw of note is that some fabric seperation can be seen where it is creased when folded over. This can be repaired by backing the interior of the pack along those tears in a dark material. This pack is so soft it could be easily stuffed with bubble wrap for a proper display. Nice old pack and in a condition you generally do not see today.
