Original era manufacture. Classic, Civil War, US Navy cutlass which as the story goes, were still in the arms lockers of US Navy Destroyers during WWII..."Away Boarders!" I wonder if the boarding party on the U-505 were carrying any of these?Polished steel blade measuring 26 inches in length. Sheet brass cupped guardwith brasspommel with a ridged wooden grip withits black leather covering remaining intact. Best of all the cutlass lives in a very nice original leather scabbard with proper frog. The cutlass is in sound condition, displaying normalage and use.The blade has a toned finish, showing some scattered nicks to the edge, with typical age staining and light pitting to the surface. Typical faint, but very readable Ames markings on the ricasso, with an 1862 date on the reverse. The leather scabbard is very nice, quite sound for its age, with all of the copper securing rivets in place, even the rivet at the tip is there. Small half inch tear at the throat from inserting and drawing the blade. Pliable original frog showing dryness on the edges, but no broken stitching. Cutlasses are readiIy available on the collectors market, however the scabbard and frog are pretty tough to find.
