Original era manufacture. When we first purchased this old canteen, it came with a very mousey and tattered tan canvas cover, installed when these Civil War production canteens were recovered for use by the military postwar. Well, the longer the canteen rattled around in the storage box, the worse the cover became, until it was literally disintegrating before our eyes. What to do? One slow day in the shop, I took a razor blade and carefully cut away the stitching of the tattered canvas cover, upon its removal, the original black wool Civil War era cover was revealed. During the modification process back in the day, the bottom, rectangular shaped metal shoulder sling loop was removed, as the newer issue canvas cover only needed the two upper loops for the new sling system.  So here we are, an original Bullseye canteen and cover, missing it's lower sling loop. Not a bad trade off I think.
