Item #69480 : Original period manufacture. Large format document measuring 10 x 15 inches, dated 17 September 1863. Named to Commissary Sergeant Oscar Soules. This is an interesting document as the name on the commission is an alias for William Oscar Sowles, this name appears on his pension/widows card. Doing an Ancestry search for Oscar Soules, we find him enlisting in the 37th in September 1861, serving through the war as Sergeant, Commissary Sergeant and finally commissioned a Lieutenant in 1866. The soldiers of the 37th were veterans of Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove Arkansas and the Siege of Vicksburg. When first outfitted for war, the two flank companies and all of the NCO's were equipped with Colt Revolving Rifles, the remainder with Springfields.
