Original period manufacture. Colorful Civil War patriotic envelope, with the image of Colonel Elmer Ellsworth at left, original cancelled postage stamp at right. Addressed to a Mr. Henry Howland in Millville Mass.The envelope is permanently adhered to a cardboard insert, which cannot be removed.Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, personal friend of Abraham Lincoln, has the sad distinction of being the first Union Officer killed during the Civil War. Shot by an enraged innkeeper in Alexandria Virginia, as Ellsworth descended the hotel stairs, after tearing down a Rebel flag.
