Original period manufacture. An interesting postally used envelope, mailed in 1864, Williamstown Massachusetts. Printed Sanitary Commission in the upper left corner, red postage stamp with a star cancellation. Written on the lower portion of the left edge is 22nd Mass. Regt. The 22nd Massachusetts Infantry served throughout the war with the Army of the Potomac, seeing combat in nearly every engagement the army fought in, including Gettysburg. They suffered the loss of 216 officers and men, killed or mortally wounded, and an additional 103 men to disease. Perhaps the envelope carried a letter of inquiry as to the fate of a wounded soldier after the Wilderness-Spotsylvania campaign.
