Original era manufacture. A near complete example of a Tiffany designed medal issued in 1866, and awarded to West Virginia soldiers who served during the Civil War.These were awarded in several forms; Honorably Discharged, Killed In Battle, or, For Liberty (died of wounds or disease). Each medal is named on the edge to the recipient and his unit. Of note, several thousand unclaimed medals are still held by the state of West Virginia to this day.Our example is near complete, original ribbon with complete suspension, missing only the attaching pin on the reverse of the top bar.It is named to Jas. O. Cleveland, Company B, 10th Reg. Inf. Vols on the edge of the planchet. He was born around 1845 in Albemarle County Virginia, and enlisted in the 10th WV Inf'y in February 1864. He had blue eyes, fair complexion and stood 5 foot 10 inches in height. The online muster sheets for James Cleveland show him sick in hospital June-July, August-September 1864, but present for duty at all other times. Mustered out with his regiment at Richmond Virginia, August 1865. During the war, the 10th WV Infantry suffered the loss of 2 officers and 93 enlisted soldiers killed, or mortally wounded, and 2 officers and 144 enlisted soldiers to disease.A partial listing of the battles in which the 10th participated in, and Cleveland was present for duty; Bermuda Hundred, Trench Duty Army of the James, Hatcher's Run, Assault and Fall of Petersburg, Pursuit of Lee, Rice's Station. They were present on the field at Appomattox Court House, April 9 1865, at the surrender of Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia.
