Original era manufacture. A very clean example of a medal established in 1866, original ribbon and suspension bar. Named on the edge to Geo Jones, Co A, 1st Rgt Vet. Vol. Inf. George Jones enlisted in Company A, 5th West Virginia Infantry on September 2nd 1861, serving with that regiment until 9 November 1864 when he was transferred into the 1st West Virginia Veteran Volunteer Infantry, until his final muster out 21 July 1865. During the Civil War the 5th West Virginia Infantry suffered the loss of 4 officers and 57 men killed or mortally wounded, and an additional 2 officers, and 88 men to disease and accidents for a total of 151 casualties.
