Original era manufacture. A very clean example of a medal established in 1866, original ribbon and suspension bar. Named on the edge, Corp. M. W. Rock Co. C. 1st Cav Vols. The American Civil War Research Database, shows Corporal Maloy W. Rock, as enlisting in C. Company, 1st West Virginia Cavalry on September 20 1861, mustering out with his regiment on July 18 1865. During the Civil War, this hard-fighting regiment lost 10 officers killed or mortally wounded, 71 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, and an additional 126 enlisted men to disease or accidents. At Gettysburg Pennsylvania on the afternoon of July 3rd 1863, the 1st WV Cavalry formed part of Farnsworth's Brigade, which was ordered to attack fixed Infantry positions behind stone walls on the right of the Confederate line. Rashly ordered to attack over broken ground by their Division Commander Judson (kill cavalry) Kilpatrick, despite the protestations of General Farnsworth, the 1st West Virginia moved to the attack. The rest is history, General Farnsworth was killed leading his men forward and the attack failed. A wonderful old medal worthy of further research.
