US Indian War Era Cabinet Card, Identified Cavalryman, Fort Meade Dakota Territory

Item #67757 : Original period manufacture. Faded sepia image of a US Cavalryman wearing the full dress uniform, his helmet rests on a photographer's prop next to him, and he holds an 1860 pattern saber in his right hand. On the bottom of the mount, in gilt lettering, is the name Gross, and Ft.Meade Dakota. On the reverse of the image an official US Pension Office stamp, dated Sep 6 1918 appears. At the bottom is a penciled name which appears to be Mr.Edward Berry, and in ink below the name, appears Troop B 8 US Cavy. In addition, an official rectangular stamp appears to the right of the inscription, "Army and Navy Division" Sep 19 1918 received. Fort Meade Dakota Territory was active from 1878 to 1944, currently housing a VA Hospital facility and South Dakota NG training areas. In 1888 the 8th Cavalry, then stationed in the New Mexico Territory, undertook the longest march ever made by a US Cavalry regiment, a distance of over 2600 miles, when they were ordered to garrison Fort Meade.
