Original era manufacture. An 1881 pattern enlisted helmet of black felt, Horstman contract. The body is sound, it is not crushed or dented, the edge binding is in sound condition, as is the thin leather band around the body of the helmet. There are a few breaks in the thin paper covering on the underside of the visors, which have turned a purplish hue from age. The sweatband is not broken or missing pieces, however it is just dry enough that I do not want to risk folding it down to check for contract markings. There are traces of a name written on the outside of the sweatband, and some soiling in the top of the helmet, which indicates this old guy was worn by someone. Only two holes can be seen behind the Staff pattern eagle plate, which has a German silver Geneva cross on the front. Matching side buttons with crosses as well. The stem of the spike is secured inside the helmet with a small brass hex nut. Assembled from original parts, at one time available from the venerable firms of Francis Bannerman and W. Stokes Kirk.
