Original era manufacture. Horstman contract, 1899 dated helmet body of felt construction. The body is not crushed or dented, the leather edge binding is sound and not flaking, and the thin leather band around the body is also intact.Pliable brown leather sweatband, the rear seam is open, but the stitching is intact. No extra holes in the body except for the ones holding the brass furniture in place. Artillery helmet plate with a German silver lyre on the front, matching stamped brass side buttons.Red wool cords with a red horsehair plume. The red wool chest cords are present but unattached to the helmet body. Assembled from original parts, at one time available from the venerable firms of Francis Bannerman and W. Stokes Kirk.
