Original era manufacture. A very fine example of the US Army issue Model 1880 Hunting Knife, made by Springfield Arsenal. Second pattern brass guard adopted in 1883 when the army ordered 5000 additional knives of the 1880 pattern. Second pattern black leather bodied scabbard with a brass belt hook. The knife is U.S. Springfield marked on the guard, on the opposite side is the serial number of it's manufacture 3395. The polished steel blade is clean, no nicks in the cutting edge, showing a few spots of surface corrosion near the point, with a cleaned corrosion smudge in the body of the blade on one side. No chips or cracks in the turned oak grip, which retains it's original varnish finish. Black leather bodied leather scabbard with sound stitching. The blade fits the body properly and draws easily. Minor scuffs on the edges of the scabbard body. The brass suspension hook has been soldier modified by tucking the tip of the hook behind the leather suspension in order to create a belt loop. This would keep the scabbard from riding-up on the man's waist and perhaps falling off his belt.
