Original era manufacture. A private purchase but regulation example of the shortened enlisted forage cap adopted in 1872. Blue wool top with an unbound, black painted leather visor and chinstrap. Two general service buttons, one on each side, secure the chinstrap. Correct style black silk lining with a gold embossed Boston makers logo in the crown. The brown leather sweatband is securely sewn to the body of the hat, however the inner black silk top curtain falls forward a bit, needs to be re-tacked. At some point in its life the hat has had a 24th Infantry emblem placed on its front. This is how the cap came to us, while the insignia is original, we cannot guarantee it to be original to the hat. The 24th and the 25th regiments, were of course, one of two, negro infantry regiments in the US Army during this period. Overall the hat is quite sound but does have a few small moth bites but nothing serious and to be expected for the age of the piece.
