Original era manufacture. Experimental bayonet from the early 1870's with a2nd pattern scabbard. The polished steel blade is bright, with scattered areas of staining and light pitting as shown. Nice blue finish to the mounting socket and shank with very light surface corrosion.Theleather covering to the metal bodied scabbard is dry and flaking, the seam on one side has opened up, however the brass tip is intact, the metal body is not crushedand little of the leather surface is broken away. The top of the belt loop is missing, but the brass US rosette remains.A final note, these trowel bayonetswere sold surplusby Bannerman's of New York in the late 19th century. They had so many in stock they sold these for years in their catalogs as garden tools for less than a dollar.
