Original era manufacture. Experimental bayonet from the early 1870's with a 2nd pattern scabbard. The polished steel blade is bright and very clean. Nice blue finish to the mounting socket and shank. The leather covering to the metal bodied scabbard is in good condition and the brass tip is intact, the metal body is not crushed and nne of the leather surface is broken away. The top of the belt loop is present, and the brass US rosette remains.A final note, these trowel bayonets were sold surplus by Bannerman's of New York in the late 19th century. They had so many in stock they sold these for years in their catalogs as garden tools for less than a dollar.
