Original era manufacture. A solid set consisting of forage cap, fatigue blouse and wool trousers. Horstmann brothers marked 1889 pattern enlisted forage cap of dark blue wool with a bound visor edge and patent leather chinstrap. Brass general service buttons on each side, fairly intact leather sweatband and full lining displaying the Horstmann imprinted logo. Overall the hat is quite sound for it's years, displaying only a touch of fraying to the seam of the sweatband. The chinstrap needs a little care as it needs to be reattached to one side button and is torn on the opposite side. Happily, our friends the moths have decided to spare this old hat from all but the smallest of their attentions. A very clean looking old hat.The tunic is of a matching material to the hat and what I feel to be a government quality issue. Steel blue wool blanket lining to the body with white cotton lining in the sleeves. Five button front secured with brass general service buttons. Minimal mothing, just a touch on the inside of the collar. The cuffs have been shortened in my opinion and the cuff buttons removed.Blue kersey wool trousers again displaying minimal moth damage. Two hip pockets with a small adjustable belt above, watch pocket, belt loops and an assortment of suspender buttons, bone, metal and celluloid. They were always losing and re-sewing suspender buttons. Off white linen lining in good order showing typical age and wear. On the outer seam of each leg a half inch wide wool stripe has been lightly tacked into place, easily removed if so desired and likely indicating theatrical use at one point. Tunic size is about a size 38 regular, hat about a 7 and the trousers have a 33 inch waist and 29 inch inseam with an extra three inches of material tucked up into the cuff. Classic 19th Century US Army/Militia Uniform from a time when our boys "continually wore the blue"..
