Original era manufacture. A pattern of scabbard produced in limited numbers during the Indian Wars, with a longer than normal belt loop, measuring 5.25 inches in length. Standard steel bodied scabbard with a brass US disc. This scabbard is discussed in American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards, by R.M. Reilly, on page 175 figure S109. It states that the loop was designed to fit over the wider MILLS looped cartridge belt, and is seldom encountered. This example displays a mix of blue and steel patina finish to the scabbard body, with old cleaned surface corrosion in evidence. The belt loop was modified at one point by a single rivet placed 2.5 inches down from the top of the loop, to accommodate a standard leather belt. This was removed at some point, with a cut across the leather strap, perhaps in an attempt to de-mill the scabbard for some reason. This cut has been nicely repaired by a collector. The leather loop is Watervliet Arsenal marked.
