Original era manufacture. A dark blue wool forage cap with a black painted leather visor with a bound edge. Black leather adjustable chinstrap secured with two brass enlisted pattern buttons. Black cotton lining with a thick leather disc sewn into the underside of the cap, Horstmann contract label at center. Brown leather sweatband which remains pliable displaying a size tag of 7 1/8. Glued to the top of the kepi are three paper arrows, in red-white-blue, representing the three divisions of the Union XVII Corps of the Civil War. Likely added by a veteran of perhaps the Corps Headquarters of the 17th, which served in the Western Theater 1862-1865. Scattered mothing to the top and sides, still displays rather nicely.
