Item #69486 : Original period manufacture. 5x8 inch sheet of plain brown paper, with an inkstamped heading, Fort Apache Arizona, Officer of the Fort Quartermaster. Dated October 17th 1890, giving a receipt totaling $4.58 for a missing case of axle grease from a delivery wagon. Signed by Post Quartermaster William H. Smith, 10th Cavalry. William Harvey Smith, born 1860 in Cass County Missouri, West Point Class of 1879. Killed in action before Santiago Cuba, July 1st 1898. Fort Apache 1870-1924, certainly one of the most famous of all the western forts during the Indian Wars, and one of the last posts closed. Now only Fort Huachuca in Cochise County remains as an active duty military post.
