Original era manufacture. A very clean example of a private purchase Infantry officers forage cap, or kepi, featuring a bound edge visor. The body of the hat is of dark blue wool, and stands a little taller than the normally encountered Indian War hat, more reminiscent of a Civil War style. Gold wire embroidered crossed rifles and 5 on the front of the hat, very thin, black leather adjustable chinstrap held in place by two eagle I buttons, one on each side. The wool displays some minor scattered mothing but nothing very serious, maybe 6 or 7 small holes, most being pinholes, the largest 3x7 mm. Wide tan leather sweatband, with a brown polished cotton lining with the Henderson Ames logo in the crown.A great looking old hat, and certainly an iconic piece of headgear worn by the US Army in the 19th century.
