Original era manufacture. A private purchase quality hat, of regulation pattern. Dark blue body, with an unbound, black painted leather visor. Thin gold wire chin cord secured by two eagle buttons displaying the letter I on their chests. Gold wire embroidered crossed rifles with 12 above. Brown polished cotton lining with a brown leather sweatband. The black cloth covered top disc displays a retailers name of J.H. Wilson of Philadelphia, a firm established in 1874 and dissolved in 1886. The hat shows mothing, with three small bites on the crown, and a larger, 30x15 mm hole on the rear band, which in turn is flanked by a 5x12 mm hole. Overall the hat is clean, the stitching is sound, and the main defects are located on the rear of the hat. During the Indian War era, the 12th US Infantry Regiment, participated in three campaigns, the Modoc Wars 1872-1873, The Bannock War in 1878, and the Sioux, at Pine Ridge, 1890-1891. Six of their number were awarded Medals of Honor during this period.
