Original era manufacture. A private purchase quality hat, ofregulation pattern. Dark blue body, with a bound, black painted leather visor.Thin goldwire chin cord secured by two Illinois pattern side buttons. No mothing to the body of the hat, size marked 6 7/8 on the leather sweatband. Gilded brass crossed sabre insignia on the front which may indicate use by a member of the 1st Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. At first inspection I thought the buttons were US Army Engineer Corps, and listed the hat as such, however using a more powerful magnification, the buttons look to be the emblem of the state of Illinois.
