Original era photography. A card mounted image by Stevenson of Leavenworth Kansas. Colonel McCaskey is shown wearing his full dress uniform, with five medals on his chest; left to right, 14th Corps, Army of the Cumberland Medal, Mollus Medal, GAR Membership Badge and perhaps the Army & Navy Union medal. Colonel McCaskey had a long and distinguished career in the Army, which began after the firing on Fort Sumter in 1861, ending in 1907 when he retired in the rank of Major General. During the Civil War he served actively with the 79th Pennsylvania Infantry as a 1st Sergeant and was mustered out at war's end as a Captain. Serving on the Frontier he commanded Fort Abraham Lincoln during the Sioux Campaign of 1876. He had the sad duty to inform Mrs. Custer of the death of her husband at the Little Big Horn battle. The image measures 3.75 x 5.5 inches, the mount 7 x 9 inches.
