Original era manufacture. US M1878 Canteen with a tan canvas cover with US stencil. The canteen is complete with its original cork stopper secured to one of the triangular loops found on each side of the body. The body of the canteen is generally free of dents with the cover showing staining from age and use. At some point in its life the letters U.S.S. were written on the cover below the U.S. stencil. The strap which was attached to the canteen at the time of our purchase, is actually a Civil War era enlisted sword belt shoulder strap. It is complete with two brass hooks, is very pliable.
