Original era manufacture. An issue quality, grayish-tan wool felt hat, with a double bound edge stitching and brown leather sweatband. On each side of the hat body is a perforated design for ventilation; known in collector parlance as the "snowflake" pattern. The leather sweatband is sound, most is securely stitched to the body, with a 5 inch long section on the right rear where the threads have given way. At some point in the past the side bow ribbon has gone away, while the remainder remains. Attached to the front of the hat is a collector added, SAW era, gilded brass enlisted cavalry insignia for D Troop (Benteen) 7th US Cavalry. Around the base of the crown is an officers pattern hat cord. Overall the hat display quite well, size about a 7, exhibiting normal age and wear.
