Item #68576 : Original period manufacture. US Army blue wool enlisted issue trousers with a 1/2 inch wool stripe down the outer seam of each leg. Heavy white cotton waistband and pocket lining, with fairly clear issue stamps on the waistband, General Q.M. Depot, San Francisco Cal., with a date of either 1887-1888, or 1897-1898, seems to change every time I look at them, so you decide. Regardless of the date, these are ISSUE trousers. The previous owners name is clearly written in indelible ink, which at first glance looks to be LT Cowles. Co.F. 20 Kan, which when purchased, I thought an officer had pressed these into service. However, it turns out this is Leaman Tracy Cowles, who indeed served as a Corporal in Company F, 20th Kansas Infantry in the Philippines. He is easily researched, as several of his letters regarding his combat service have been published online. Single hip pocket with half belt above, missing one of the suspender buttons, top waist button and three of the fly buttons. Two front pockets and watch pocket. The waistband measures about 34 inches and the inseam 28 inches, please note that the cuffs have been turned up about 4 inches making the true inseam 34 inches. These can be let out again if desired. There are a few small moth bites, again nothing dreadful, colors are clean, no soiling or tearing. Scarce pair of original issue trousers, with combat history for the soldier in the Philippines at the turn of the 19th century.
