Original era manufacture. Purchased from a local estate several years ago (yes, we are finally getting to clean out the corners a bit this year), is this late 18th, early 19th officers sword from a Massachusetts family with the surname of Shaw.Curved steel blade measuring 29 inches point to ricasso, with a polished surface and traces of original frosting remaining. The blade runs straight and true, without nicks in the cutting edge, displaying areas of cleaned corrosion on both sides near the point.Steel patina, T-shaped guard, with a curved pommel covered in wooden grips. At some point in the past the original grips were replaced with the current examples, at the same time, the guard was reversed during re-assembly, as a small ring on one end, is on the opposite side of the pommel where a similar ring can be seen. These were used to attach a small chain to at one time, which is now missing.Simple sheet steel scabbard made without a drag, overall exhibiting a dark steel patina finish. Mounting points for two suspension rings, one of which is missing. The scabbard throat guide is present, missing one of the attaching screws.
