Original era manufacture. Polished steel blade measuring 34 inches in length, with clear markings on the reverse ricasso, N.P. Ames, Cutler, Springfield, 1838, with J.H. sub-inspectors below. The Army inspector initials, MPL are visible on the top of the guard above the quillon. The bright finished blade runs straight and true, free from any major edge nicks beyond a few tiny nail catchers. The original leather bumper is in place at the base of the blade. Mellow brass patina finish to the three branch guard, with no breaks or distortion of the branches. Single strand of finely twisted wire binding. Bright steel patina finish steel scabbard with both suspension rings intact, WS inspector's marks on the drag. Clean finish with scattered denting, one small crease above the drag. Nothing unusual for a service used weapon in close contact with 800 pound animals. Sword draws and returns easily. Slightly over 6,000 examples were produced in the years 1834-1839.
