Original era manufacture. US M1860 Staff Officers pattern sword, maker marked A&A. Schnitzler Solingen. The diamond shaped, polished steel blade displays an etched design on both sides of the blade, and measures 30 inches in length. The blade runs straight and true, with a nice polish remaining on the surface. Brass patina finish guard and pommel with military motif decorations on the surface. One side of the clam shell guard folds down, the small locking ball is missing. Portions of the red wool felt bumper at the base of the blade remain. Shagreen wrapped grip which is bound in single strand, twisted brass wire. Plated finish to the dent-free scabbard with brass decoration. Set upon the surface of the scabbard between the suspension rings, is a two inch, thin gold presentation plate, which displays the following in a nice floral engraving; "Presented to Capt W.G. Bronson by members of K Co 1st Rgt, Camp Bend, July 1885 NGSM". I tried a run at doing some research here, and I believe this sword was presented to Captain W.G. Bronson, commander of company K, 1st Minnesota Infantry, and the name "Camp Bend", is in honor of Colonel W.B. Bend, commander of the 1st Minnesota at that time. William Gay Bronson, born in Vermont 1843, died Stillwater Minnesota 1912.
