Original era manufacture. Standard pattern 1873 bayonet with a blue steel finish and very light surface corrosion on its shank. Of note is the Hoffman pattern scabbard with its inovative brass rotating device. This pattern was adopted by the St.Louis Board in June of 1870 and approved by the Secretay of War in July of that year with a royalty paid to the inventor, a Colonel Hoffman, of 5 cents per scabbard. The scabbard loop leather is quite sound and is clearly marked Waterveliet Arsenal. The Hoffman device was patented in April of 1865 and allows the scabbard to pivot forward and back with the brass stops preventing a 360 degree movement. Our information source is excellent, but long out of print, The American Bayonet by Albert N. Harding Jr, 1964.
