Original era manufacture. Polished steel blade, pommel and guard with a US and 1897 date on the ricasso.  The blade is clean with an even steel patina finish with a matching finish to the guard, and a black painted finish to the pommel.There are some marks from an inexpert sharpening attempt on the edge, up near the point, they don't really stand out, and blend well with the overall finish of the blade.Sound, original finish wooden grips, displaying typical light marring and denting from service use.The steel scabbard and hanger are relatively dent-free, with a black gloss paint finish on the surface. Likely an attempt to keep moisture at bay, and at least in the case of the Japanese, possibly indicates use by our navy or marines.
