Original era manufacture. One of the rarest examples of the US Krag series of bayonets is the M1900 Bowie pattern. Conflicting estimates of manufacture range from 2000-2800 examples produced at Springfield Arsenal, with 1500 being sent to the Philippines, and 500 to Cuba for testing. All are dated 1900. Typically these are found in very clean condition. This example exhibits considerable service wear, with the guard being modified by the wearer. The 9 inch, thin steel blade is bright, with clear markings on the ricasso, US & 1900. The surface displays evidence of improper cleaning, however the configuration remains intact. The guard has been modified by have both sides removed. Original wood grips with steel rivets with a steel patina finish to the pommel, the lock mechanism is intact. The all steel construction Bowie pattern Krag scabbard is complete. It also displays an old improper cleaning attempt on the body with traces of the original blue up near the scabbard throat. Mix of blue and surface corrosion on the Krag pattern hanger. A better condition example of this rare bayonet sold at auction in 2018 for $2468.
