Original era manufacture. An elaborate dark blue wool coatee, with white wool trim and extensive gold wire embroidery. Thick white wool Sergeant chevrons on each sleeve, with detailed decoration on each cuff and matching decoration on the tails. Triple breasted (missing one button) each showing the regimental number 71 (Jackson Light Infantry) on the face. Typical scattered mothing, normal for a coat of this age, with some seam separation on each shoulder, and some loosening of the threads which secure the frogging to the front of the coat. Full and complete padded body lining with black polished cotton lined tails, now faded to green. Small size, about a 36. Raised in 1861 for service in the Civil War, the 71st fought in most of the major battles during the war, as part of the Excelsior Brigade, including the Battle of Gettysburg. It also served during the Spanish American War, being one of the few regiments to see combat in Cuba.
