Original era manufacture. A beautiful condition example of a sword pattern introduced in 1860, regulation wear for Staff officers. Made by the famous firm of Ames of Massachusetts, with the Civil War era blade, in a diamond shape, cross sectioned.Nearly 100% of the original gilding on the guard, and pommel remains, along with the fire gilded fittings on the scabbard. The scabbard body is dent free, and displays a beautiful deep blue finish. Flawless black leather wrapped grip, with single twisted wire binding. Looped through the top of the guard, and wrapped around the hilt, is an original officers pattern dress knot in gold wire. The blade measures 31 inches in length, with a diamond shape in cross section, making this an early production blade, quite likely left over from Civil War production. The Ames name can be seen on the ricasso, and there is an etched floral pattern running up two thirds of the blade length. There are scattered patches of surface corrosion on each side, nothing terrible, and the remainder of the blade is in original polish.Accompanying the sword, and likely a testament to the swords beautiful condition, is this original white cotton storage bag. The original owners name, J. Judson, Rhinebeck New York, is written at the top of the bag in a very 19th century style hand. Without a doubt, one of the nicest examples of a M1860 Staff Officers Sword we have ever offered for sale.
