Original era manufacture. A magnificent badge in silver and gold, often referred to as a "Jewel". Inscribed on the reverse of the star as being presented to; "Past Commander, John O. Woodman, by Post 40, G.A.R. Malden (Massachusetts) Jan. 7. 1909". John O H Woodman was born in New Hampshire in 1845. In his eighteenth year he enlisted in Company E, 12th New Hampshire Infantry, 3 September 1862, and was mustered out of service with his regiment June 21 1865 at Richmond Virginia. The American Civil War Research Database states that he deserted at Fredericksburg Virginia December 1862, returning to duty (voluntarily) in January 1864; serving honorably thereafter, and was slightly wounded at Cold Harbor. He died 7 November 1916. A woodcut image of John O. Woodman appears on page 621 of the regimental history of the 12th New Hampshire; his bio in the book states the following, "...born in New Hampton, and was a student there at the time of his enlistment. His parents were Benjamin P. and Elizabeth M. (Hill) Woodman. In all of the battles of the Regiment after it left Point Look Out. Wounded slightly at Cold Harbor but not enough to be disabled from duty. Married Mary P. Foster, of Lebanon, January 1 1870 (deceased), married his second wife, Sarah W. Haskins, of Enfield, May 2nd 1872". The medal measures 5.25 inches in length, and is constructed of eight separate components including the ribbon, and is housed in it's original presentation case by Frederick T. Widmer (1877-1955) of Boston. A fine example of a late 19th, early 20th century jeweler's art.
