Original period manufacture. Ok, now our title is quite a mouthful isn't it? Reason being isI have no real idea exactly who this bayonet was intended to use it. However the modifications which were done to this example are to a very high degree of expertise, which leads me to believe it was arsenal done. The physical description is as follows; standard pattern M1942 bayonet made by PAL and dated 1942, but shortened to 12 inch, not 10 inch length. Chrome finish to the blade with a high polish steel finish to the guard and pommel. Variant dark brown plastic grips instead of the more commonly seen black grips. The scabbard is the second pattern, leather covered M1905 scabbard which was modified with the removal of the Krag style hanger and the addition of the M1910 belt hook. Interestingly themarkings RIA 192(1) appear on the front of the scabbard body instead of the normally encountered reverse. The overall condition of the bayonet is very clean, just light, normal use and wear. Because of the quality of the modifications I wonder if this was notdone for an important Honor Guarduse, perhaps the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, or a Presidential Guard.I've never seen another example quite like this one, but that's what keeps us interestedin collecting isn't it?
