Original era manufacture. A well worn example of the US Foot Artillery Sword, copied from the French, and originally inspired by the ancient Roman Gladius.Steel double edged blade measuring 19 inches in length, N.P. Ames logo on one side of the ricasso, and United States 1843 on the other. The blade surface is very dark, the point blunted, overall showing signs of heavy service use. Heavy cast brass guard and grip with a fish-scale design, ending with an eagle design on both sides of the pommel. Damage to the pommel on one side, casting flaw, or sharpnel damage? Honestly it has the look of a field recovered item, picked up a few months or a year after being dropped.
