Item #68403 : Original period manufacture. Fine quality blue wool top with a black velvet band and patent leather visor. The hat band and visor are decorated with think gold bullion oak leaves which are directly embroidered into the surface. At the center of the band is an embroidered gold wire wreath with a silver metal American eagle set into the center of the wreath. Gold brocade adjustable chins strap, secured with a rimless eagle button on each side. Maroon silk lining with a silver printed Pettibone label at center. The leather sweatband is loose in a few spots, but it has been carefully tacked in several locations in order to keep where it should be. No moth issues, just a tiny flex crack in the surface of the visor center, really a beautiful hat overall. A word on the Non-Reg style eagle decoration, often General rank officers were allowed a certain amount of leeway, or bending of regulations in their uniform styles. As my career US Navy Dad often said, "Rank has it's privileges", General Nelson Miles was quite fond of bending the regs now and then.
