Original era issue. Dark blue wool issue coat with a decided Prussian influence to it's design. Size marked 3-M and 1904-05 date in the left shoulder lining. Eight button front, all are present, however the top button needs to be resewn. No moth issues to report, but being such a dark blue, there may be one lurking somewhere. Bright red wool collar, fixed shoulder straps and cuff trim. The name J.W.DEAN is boldly stenciled in the white cotton lining, several other names also appear, SANDLIN O., and a handwritten name I can't quite make out. Dean has an extensive muster record available on Ancestry, a copy of which is included with the coat. His first entry is on January 1901 aboard the USS Albany, and his last, July 1905 at Marine Barracks DC. In the interim he saw extensive service in the Philippines with a stint back at Marine barracks DC, then once again out to the PI. There was a lot going on in those early years of the 20th century in the Philippines. Should be some interesting research. Coats similar to this example are rather scarce in the scheme of things, the US Marine Corps enlisted strength only averaged around 6240 men between 1900-1905.
