Original era manufacture. A decent example of the experimental saber introduced for trials by the US Army in 1905. The polished steel blade measures 30 inches in length, with ASCO (Ames Sword Company) Ordnance Bomb, 1906 stamped into the ricasso.Beyond remnants of an old lacquer protective finish, the blade runs straight and true without issuesSteel guard which is unit marked on the underside A 9 CAV 57 (A troop, 9th Cavalry, 57th weapon). Fishskin wrapped grip which is bound by triple strand wire. Both the guard and grip display a protective lacquer finish applied by a previous owner sometime in the past. The grip displays wear to the top edges, likely from service handling, and perhaps was the reason for the lacquering. The scabbard is for the USM1860 Cavalry Saber, not the oneprovided from the factory, which was of leather covered wood. This may have been a period replacement by the military, as the original may not have held up during field trials. In any case thescabbard fits the blade properly and matches theoverall condition quite well, although it has not been lacquered.
